Open Access – journals and books available for all

Open Access publications are openly and immediately available to everyone, regardless of time, place or affiliation. Open Access publications can be journals, individual journal articles, or scientific books.

The library’s database list includes many services and databases that are available to everyone. These services appear on the list without the lock icon next to the name of the service. Browse e.g. Helda repository for Uniarts theses and other publications. Open Access archives such as CORE, BASE and DOAJ include hundreds of millions Open Access publication. The Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB) includes nearly 30,000 books from all fields of science, including Arts and Humanities. Journal.fi is a portal for Finnish Open Access society journals mostly in Finnish but also in Swedish and English.  Some but not all Open Access publications can also be searched and accessed via Arsca search portal.

In addition, The International Coalition of Library Consortia (ICOLC) maintains a list of resources that publishers and vendors have opened for everyone for the duration of the coronavirus epidemic. The list is being updated, and it includes Open Access resources. See ICOLC COVID19 Complimentary Expanded Access Specifics

Articles that have appeared in a paywalled journal may be available freely somewhere else, such as a university repository (like Helda). Unpaywall is a browser extension that gives you a direct link to an open version of a paywalled article when one is available. Unpaywall finds ca. 25 million openly available articles, harvested legally from university repositories and library systems. Using the extension is legal and highly recommended.

New e-materials for Uniarts students and staff

Many publishers and vendors, such as ProQuest and Bloomsbury, are providing additional access to their e-resources during the COVID-19 outbreak. The material is available via links in the library’s database list, and the list is constantly updated. These materials are available to you when you sign in with your Uniarts-account in Arsca.  If the database is in trial use, it has been mentioned how long the material is available. Please note that only some of the e-resources can be found through the Arsca search service.

You can find the new databases in trial use on the right side of the database list.

You can give feedback on e-materials or make an acquisition proposal
